Olympic Hockey Quarter-Final Odds

No upsets yesterday, though the Swiss, Czech and Slovak wins were way closer than they should have been.  But the quarter-finals move along exactly as expected.

Here's what the gamblers are saying about today's matchups:

Round Favorite Win % Underdog
QF CAN 54 RUS
QF SWE 63 SVK
QF CZE 56 FIN
QF USA 83 SUI

These odds were derived from the average betting lines across multiple betting sites.  See this for more details.

I'm going to be at the USA-SUI and SWE-SVK games, and, much more importantly, at the Canada-Russia game, which the betting world thinks is the real gold medal match in these Olympics.

Poor Russia

Best team in the tournament, undefeated in regulation time despite a relatively tougher division, won their pool, and their first elimination game is against Canada.

At least Canada is responsible for it’s own fate – it could have avoided this by beating the Swiss in regulation, or at least taking the USA to overtime. But poor Russia would have been better off if they had lost to the Czechs.

Best team in the tournament

People who wager money on these things disagree with you.

To be fair, a lot of the people wagering are Canadians betting on Canada. And well over 40% of people betting on this game agree with his position. Considering strength of competition, I think there’s a pretty good case that Russia is the class of the tournament so far.

If the bookies were shading heavily toward CAN, smart bettors with deep pockets would be jumping all over RUS to shift the balance back to the “correct” odds. That hasn’t happened.

Also, betting sites with a .ru domain are offering the same odds. Despite playing a rested opponent in the second of back-to-back games, Canada’s the favourite. So say the Russian bookies.
